Shinko-ryū Shinkenjutsu (神狐流真剣術) is a gendai budo (modern system) of Japanese swordsmanship rooted in the core principles of traditional kenjutsu and iaijutsu. Shinko, the Divine Fox, is the sacred guardian of Shinto tradition for whom we hold deep reverence. The kitsune (fox) embodies qualities of adaptability, agility, precision, and cunning that inspire the techniques we practice, while its celestial ascension symbolizes power, intelligence, grace, and dignity that guide the spirit of our ryūha. Through the practice of Shinkenjutsu, the art of the real sword, Shinko-ryū reflects our commitment to earnest training forged in the crucible of combat, carried out with sincerity and martial clarity.
Shinko-ryū is a system of Japanese swordsmanship that blends the foundations of traditional kenjutsu and iaijutsu with proven techniques from other sword arts, refined through traditional drills and applied in full-contact, armored fencing. As part of the broader JSA (Japanese Sword Arts) community, we actively engage with practitioners of HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), selectively integrating techniques from historical European manuscripts that complement and enhance the existing core of Shinko-ryū as they apply to the katana, further evolving it into a practical and dynamic combat system.
Shinko-ryū is not yet a fully established dojo with a formal ranking or licensing system. We currently operate as a combat methodology and study group, transmitting our techniques through affiliated instructors and schools. While we maintain high standards in our pedagogy, we do not yet issue dan ranks or menkyo (traditional licenses). Our present focus is on cultivating strong foundations, effective techniques, and practical application by integrating fencing concepts, athleticism, and competitive experience into our traditional framework. We also aim to establish a national Gekiken-based tournament circuit that fosters skill development, encourages cross-style collaboration, and serves as a proving ground for practitioners of Japanese swordsmanship in a modern context.
